The captains assembled that night in Cortés’s tent for a postbattle analysis. The commander-general sat in his chair, the captains on the ground.

“What time is it?” Cortés asked.

“It is twenty minutes to nine,” Núñez answered. He did not bring up that Cuy was wounded. Adu had shared the knowledge with him that she was shot by a Spanish arrow. Could it be that she merely got in the way, that the arrow was intended for a Tlaxcalan?
